“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 2:7
Man BECAME a living soul, he did not RECEIVE it. A living soul came into being through the combination of body and breath(soul). God did not GIVE man a soul. Man also does not HAVE a soul. Man IS a soul.
Let us compare 2 parallel verses in the New Testament to confirm that the soul is the person.
“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

“For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? Luke 9:25 (KJV)
“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?” Luke 9:25 (NKJV)
“For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

Where does the soul go when a person dies?
The breath of life returns to God.
The body returns to the earth/dust.
What remains?
Nothing – The soul ceases to exist.
The soul is like the light of a lightbulb. By switching it on, the lightbulb is supplied with electricity, it glows and shines light. By switching it off, the light (soul) ceases to shine and disappears. It ceases to exist.
